A Course in Miracles

A course in miracles is a self-study spiritual thought system that consists of three books: the Text, which lays out the concepts upon which the whole course rests; the Workbook for Students, comprised of 365 daily lessons; and the Manual for Teachers. The course is not a religion, but uses Christian terminology and emphasizes experience rather than belief in a theology.

It teaches that reality is composed only of God’s thoughts and reflects love, peace, unity, sinlessness, abundance, and forgiveness. It identifies the body and mind as the source of illusion and teaches that it is possible to replace them with new, loving, correct thoughts. The goal is forgiveness, which leads to freedom from conflict, pain and suffering.

The course was written in 1976 by Helen Schucman. It is said that it was dictated to her, word for word, via a process of “inner dictation” from Jesus Christ. It has since been published in over twenty-five languages. Despite its spiritual nature, the course is very practical and offers an approach to life that many people find highly beneficial. For example, the course explains how you can live a happy life that is free from conflict, pain and suffering by letting go of the illusion of separation and embracing the knowledge of one’s true identity.

a course in miracles is a book about forgiveness, love, and God. It was published in 1976, and claims to have been dictated to Helen Schucman word for word via a process of “inner dictation” from Jesus Christ. Its underlying premise is that the greatest “miracle” is simply gaining a full awareness of love’s presence in a person’s life.

It is an ego-deflating, non-dual Acim spiritual thought system that emphasizes the role of forgiveness as the means to healing and freedom. It uses Christian terminology, but it is ecumenical in its view and clearly states that it is not a religion. Its three books — the Text, which lays out its thought system; the Workbook for Students, a set of 365 daily lessons; and the Manual for Teachers — are organized as a curriculum for self-study that emphasizes experience over belief in a specific theology.

The Course’s goal is to teach that the world we see is not real, that all guilt and suffering arise from misperceptions of what is true, and that happiness can be found by learning to forgive – not only others but oneself – and therefore awakening to truth and peace. Ultimately, it is about remembering the truth of our oneness with God.
